He'll swindle and scam corporations out of ten dollars just for the thrill. Soon Marty hatches a scheme to steal petty refund checks from his mortgage company, thinking he'll somehow fool banks into cashing them. He reveals his plan to his only work friend, Derek, who's seen Marty fail in the past. Marty's growing suspicions forces him to hide out in Derek's basement for a week, terrified of the outside world. His anxiety temporarily subsides with absurd basement party games, but eventually festers into a dangerous state of aggression. After lashing out against Derek, Marty hops a bus to Detroit, a city victim to the same type of corporate oppression that Marty fears. His nights are spent at either derelict motels or a luxurious high rise, depending on how much is in his pocket at the time. As soon as he comes into money, he spends it.
